Chapter 14 - Recruitment

It was indeed a very busy afternoon at the Walker residence. Dr. Walker was given the information needed to call the police and report the “burglary.” He and Nessie worked with the detectives, making sure they took good dustings… following Blink’s own prescription as if he had left them a written copy.

“The dog must have scared him off,” asserted Dr. Walker to the detective. “He even left his gloves and lock-picking do-dads behind.”

Upstairs, in the study, ElDann began bringing Agent Jameson into the rest of God’s universe. He explained his own origins and a little about his mission on Earth.

He had already, on the day before the party, briefly explained the focus of the mission to his team, including the Walkers. Particularly, he focused on the search for the “box of bones.” As he was getting to that part of the story in his recitation to Agent Jameson, George and Nessie finally arrived upstairs… having completed their police report.

“Dr. Walker,” Agent Jameson addressed his friend. “I thought of a great idea…”

“Ok, Brinker, go ahead,” Walker replied.

“Ok, dig this… I want to jump through the hoops to get you assigned a ‘protected informant’ status with the agency… since we are supposed to be checking with each other periodically, anyway,” Jameson explained. “It would give me an excuse to be hangin’ with you all, and you would be almost, uh, kind of like deputized, in a way. Instant Law enforcement Right to Carry Permit included! I could also have you and Nessie as guests at the office, if ever needed. And, you’d get special temporary I.D.’s issued, in duplicate… with added clearance accidentally programmed in… no expiration; and it would all be just so nice!”

“Wow… can you do that?” Walker responded.

Brinker twisted his head in kind of an, of course I can, head swim.

“Got a Bible?” Jameson asked.

“Right here!”

“Cool! Raise your right hands…uh, not the alien. Now, repeat after me.”

“I, insert your name… do solemnly swear… to whoop ass on the bad guys… and help the good guys… ‘til Kingdom come… literally… Amen. It’s not word for word, ya know.”

“Hoo-hah!” shouted Nessie.

“Semper Fi!” hooted Walker.

“Yeah, Baby!” Brinker growled in a low voice.

ElDann gave out a piercingly loud whistle through his teeth that drew an instant bark out of Lucky at the bottom of the steps. They all laughed.

“How do you white guys do that?” Brinker asked, half jokingly.

“I don’t know,” replied ElDann with a smile. “You either can or you can’t.”

“Uh huh, keeping the black man down, even on other planets, huh?” They all laughed again.

Nessie pulled out her phone. “I’m ordering pizza, anything special for you guys?” she offered.

“Surprise us!” the answer came back.

Inside the Marakandran, ElDann’s ship, Kuel, Hannat, and Nohjyn had been listening to the entire exchange since ElDann and Jameson went upstairs to talk. They were listening by way of ElDann’s internal com-system, which he had left on for that very purpose. But, Kuel now saw fit to break radio silence.

“Hey, we want pizza, too!” he shouted in ElDann’s head.
